As I was getting the Marantz ready for the discussion, I was fortunate to listen to a conversation between the girls about their friend’s boyfriend. As first I thought I would be the usual chit chat between girls but an issue came up that struck me. One of the girls asked their friend why she wasn’t talking to her boyfriend and them she replied saying ‘he wanted her to start wearing a head scarf then I asked her how old she was with which she replied she was 17 and he was 18 and they have been together for 7 months. She then continued the conversation by telling her friends that he wants her to stop wearing shorts and shirts or revealing outfits and to stop putting hair extensions.
I thought this was quite interesting as it highlights they society that we live in which I believe in some ways younger people get involved in serious relationships at such a young age where they are tied down instead of living their youth as the boys tend to be controlling as this situation highlighted.
Another conversation that I found intriguing happened when I was in a cab when an Indian cab driver expressed his dislike for Pakistanis as he believed that they were ‘lazy’ they claim a lot of benefits, do not work and their excuse is they can’t speak English’ .He continued saying how he hates being mistaken for one and how people mainly treat him differently (in a negative way – they gave him less money) until they realised that he’s Indian not Pakistani. This conversation remotely reminded me of Karina Correa’s documentary Train of Freedom.
A few weeks ago I my friends and I got into a discussion about choice and the amount of choices that we have our every day life. He stated that we have too much choice mainly focusing on the foods we consume. For example: Rice – brown, white, long grain, basmati etc;
I found this conversation really interested it actually made me think about the amount of choices or supposedly choices we have.
